In the third quarter of 1856, William Laughlin and Jane Squirrel
were married in the Ipswich district. In 1861, they were living at 47 Victoria Street,
Ipswich and William (aged 33) was working as a grocer. William’s sister Elizabeth
and her husband Walter Smith were living in a separate household at the same address.
There was no sign of any children, but they had a niece, Eliza Squirrel aged 3, living
with them.
In 1871, they were living in Samuel Road, Ipswich and William was working as a
grocer’s assistant. With them were four children - Catherine aged 9, Eustace aged 8,
Jane aged 7 and Joseph aged 4.
Some time later, they moved to Northampton and Eustace William Laughlin died there
in 1878, aged 15. By 1881 they were living at 23 St Giles Street, Northampton and
William was working as a “dairyman and greengrocer”. With them were four children -
Catherine aged 19 and Jane aged 17 (both working as dressmakers), Joseph aged 15
was a dairyman (possibly helping his father) and Nellie was aged 2. In the same
household was a servant (Emma Hall aged 14) and two visitors (Robert and Mary
Harper from Norfolk). Jane Laughlin died in Northampton in 1884, aged 50.
In 1891 they were living at the same address and William was working as a dairyman.
With him were three children - Jane aged 27, Joseph aged 25 and Nellie aged 5
(she should have been 12). Wiliiam Laughlin died there in 1894 aged 66. In 1895,
Joseph Herbert Laughlin was married in Northampton and he died there in 1911
at the age of 45. Nellie Ada Laughlin was married in Northampton in 1913, but
the others have not been traced any further.
