William Laughlin c1825-? and Rebecca Jackson c1831-?.
It is assumed that the William Laughlin who married Rebecca Jackson
in Ely and settled at Walney in Norfolk was the son of Benjamin
Laughlin and his wife Martha Salmon, who had been born in Elmswell around 1825
and appeared there with his parents in 1841. The identification is less certain
because none of the census data so far obtained gives Elmswell as his birthplace.
If this identification is correct then he remained in Walney, working as an agricultural
labourer.
In 1861, William and Rebecca Laughlin were living at Hundred Feet Bank in Walney
with their two daughters, Mary (aged 3) and Elizabeth (aged 5 months). Elizabeth
died at the end of 1861.
In 1871, William and Rebecca Laughlin were living at the same address with their
children - Mary aged 12 and Christopher aged 3. Ten years later, in 1881, they were
still there - Mary was now 23 and Christopher was 14. They have not yet been found
in 1891.
