In 1861, Thomas and Mahalar Laughlin and their family were living
in Woolpit. Thomas was working as a brickmaker and so was his eldest son Walter (born
in 1851 and aged 10 although his age was given as 12). The younger children were William
(aged 11), Frederick (born around 1854 and baptised January 1958) and Rose Ellen (born
1859 and baptised June 1859).
In 1871, Thomas and Mahala Laughlin were living in Mill Lane/Alley, Woolpit, but
Thomas was now working as an agricultural labourer. Walter (aged 19 and born in
Elmswell) was now a grocer; Frederick (aged 16 and born in Elmswell) was an
agricultural labourer like his father; and the three girls (Rose aged 12, Mahala
aged 9 and Thirza aged 6) were still at school. Charlotte (whose birth was registered
at the same time as Walter's and who died in 1854) may also have belonged to this
family.
In 1881, Thomas and Mahala Laughlin were still living in Mill Lane, Woolpit and
Thomas was working as a general labourer. Only two of their children were still
living at home - they were Frederick (aged 26 and a general labourer) and Thirza
(aged 17 and a day servant). Mahala Laughlin, aged 70, was buried in Woolpit on
3rd May 1895.
