Jonathan Laughlin 1793-? and Elizabeth Bumstead c1790-1860 .
Jonathan was the son of Benjamin Laughley
and his wife Elizabeth Hawers. He was baptised in Wetheringsett in March 1793 and
probably born earlier that year. The IGI shows a possible marriage, namely: Jonathan
Laughlin married Elizabeth Bumstead on 10th April 1814 in Witnesham.
The IGI also gives the baptism of Benjamin son of Jonathan
Laughlin and Elizabeth Bumstead on 10th July 1804 in Wickham Skeith. This is
unlikely since it was 10 years before their marriage, but he may have been baptised
in 1814 not 1804. He may have been buried in Ipswich in 1880 (aged 65 and so born

After this, Jonathan and Elizabeth seem to have settled in Whitton-cum-Thurston on the
north-eastern outskirts of Ipswich. The IGI gives details of their children.
Charles, son of Jonathan and Elizabeth Laughlin was baptised on 9th May 1821 in Whitton.
Richard son of Jonathan and Elizabeth Laughlin baptised 9th May 1824 in Whitton.
John son of Jonathan and Elizabeth Laughlin baptised 9th May 1824 in Whitton. He may
have been the John Laughlin, aged 68, buried in Ipswich on 7th July 1886.
Thomas son of Jonathan and Elizabeth Laughlin was baptised on 26th September 1824
in Whitton.
After this, they seem to have joined the Baptists in Dairy Lane, Ipswich
and the births of their remaining children are given in the IGI.
William son of Jonathan Laughlin and Elizabeth Bumstead born 22nd January 1827.
Elizabeth daughter of Jonathan Laughlin and Elizabeth Bumstead born 10th May 1829.
Samuel son of Jonathan Laughlin and Elizabeth Bumstead born 27th February 1831.
Mary daughter of Jonathan Laughlin and Elizabeth Bumstead born 17th August 1832.
David son of Jonathan Laughlin and Elizabeth Bumstead born 15th February 1835.
The 1841 Census for Whitton-cum-Thurston showed Johnathan and Elizabeth Laughlin
living there, and both Johnathan and his eldest son Charles Laughlin (aged 20-24)
were working as farm labourers. With them were Thomas and William (both aged 15-19),
Samuel aged 10, Mary aged 7 and David aged 6.
1851 has not yet been searched, but by 1861, the children were living in either
Whitton or Ipswich and neither Jonathan nor Elizabeth have been found. Elizabeth
Laughlin, aged 67, had been buried in Ipswich on 26th July 1860 but Jonathan's
burial has not been found.
Elizabeth Laughlin daughter of Jonathan Laughlin and Elizabeth Bumstead
was born on 10th May 1829 and her birth was recorded by the Baptists in Dairy Lane,
Ipswich. In the third quarter of 1859, Elizabeth Laughlin and Walter Smith were
married in Ipswich and they were living at 47 Victoria Street, Ipswich in the 1861
census - the same address as Elizabeth’s brother William and his wife Jane.
Walter (aged 30) was working as a labourer and his mother Mary Smith was
living with the young couple.
Mary Laughlin daughter of Jonathan Laughlin and Elizabeth Bumstead was
born on 17th August 1832 and her birth was recorded by the Baptists in Dairy Lane,
Ipswich. In the third quarter of 1858, Mary Laughlin and Samuel Dorling
were married in Ipswich. Their daughter Amelia Alma was born a year later
and in 1861 they were living in East Street, Ipswich and Samuel was working
as a bricklayer’s labourer.
