John Merton Laughlin 1832-? and Martha Hilton c1836-?.

In 1841, John Lafling (aged 11) was living with the Watchman family in Nettlestead, but he had been born in Rushford and was probably the son of John Laughlin and his wife Elizabeth Merton. (Mary Ann Lafling, aged 15 and living in the same household was probably not his sister because she was born before their parent's wedding.) John joined the police force and moved to Yorkshire. When he married Martha Hilton in 1857, he gave his name as "John Merton Laughlin" - Merton was his mother's maiden name.
