Benjamin Laughlin 1798-1856 and Martha Salmon c1800-1846.

Benjamin was the son of Benjamin Laughley and his wife Elizabeth Hawers. He was baptised in Wetheringsett on 2nd February 1798 and may have moved a few miles east to Elmswell.

The IGI shows that Benjamin Laughlin married Martha Salmon in Elmswell on 12th October 1819 and they were found living in Balney Bay, Elmswell in 1841 with their seven children. These were Betsey (aged 20-24), William (aged 15-19), Thomas (aged 15-19), Alfred (aged 13), Walter (aged 11), David (aged 8) and Martha (aged 4). The approximate dates of birth may be calculated from the census, but no reference to their births or baptisms has been found in the IGI for Suffolk.

Martha Laughlin, aged 46, was buried on 10th January 1846 in Elmswell. Benjamin Laughlin died in the third quarter of 1856 in the Stow Registration District.

Their daughter Elizabeth or Betsey was aged about 20 in the 1841 census and the IGI shows an "Elizabeth Laughlin daughter of Benjamin and Martha" baptised in Elmswell on 3rd December 1820. It also shows the baptism on 18th May 1845 of "Mary Ann Warren/Laughlin daughter of Elizabeth Laughlin" baptised in Elmswell on 18th May 1845 and a Mary Ann Warren/Laughlin married Thomas Seadon on 28th October 1864 in Woolpit. Elizabeth Laughlin married Joseph Fairs in Elmswell on 17th June 1850 and they were living at Heath, Woolpit in 1861. Joseph was worlking as an agricultural labourer and they were accompanied by their three children, Elvinah Fairs aged 7 and Sarah E. Fairs aged 6, born in Elmswell and the youngest Walter Fairs aged 1 born in Woolpit.

The three youngest children (Walter Laughlin born around 1830, David Laughlin born around 1833 and Martha Laughlin born around 1837) were with their parents in Elmswell in 1841. Nothing more is known about them.
