In 1861, Alfred and Ann Laughlin were living in the Street, Wetherden. Alfred was working as an agricultural labourer and they had three children (Jane aged 10, Henry aged 6 and Frederick William aged 1). Since Mahala had a brother Bernard Garland, it seems likely that Bernard Laughlin (born and died 1853) was also one of their children.

In 1871, Alfred and Emma Laughlin were living in Childer Road, Stowmarket and Alfred was now a labourer in a brickyard. Jane (aged 20) had left home; Henry (aged 16) was working as a miller, Frederick (aged 11) was still at school and the two youngest children were Catherine aged 6 and George aged 4. George had been born after the move to Stowmarket. Ellen (born 1856 and died 1858) may have belonged to this family. Bernard Garland, Emma's brother, was also living in the household.

In 1881, Alfred and Emma Laughlin were living at Violet Hill, Orchard Place, Stowmarket and Alfred was a carter in a brickyard. With them were their two youngest sons - Frederick William (aged 21 and a machine fitter) and George Edwin (aged 14 and a wine merchent’s porter). Their daughters - Catherine (aged 30) and Jane (aged 20) had left home. Their son Henry (aged 26) was probably the Henry Laughlin (said to be aged 36 and a police constable born in Wetherden) who was living at 42 High Street, Ealing. Alfred Laughlin, aged 53, was buried on 19th April 1882 in Stowmarket.

In 1891, Henry Laughlin and his wife Alice were living in Teddington, Surrey and Henry was a police constable. His widowed mother Emma Laughlin, aged 62 and born in Ashfield, Suffolk, was living with them.
