Hammond Laflin 1845-1875 and Sarah Watts 1843-1867.
Hammond was the son of Hammond Laflin
and his first wife Maria Wright and he was born in the autumn of 1845. In 1851
and 1861 he was living in Bildeston with his parents & in 1861 was described as
a "tailor aged 12" although he was in fact 15.
In 1864, he married Sarah Watts in Bury St Edmonds. Their first daughter, Sarah
Adelaide Laflin, was born in the autumn of 1864 and died in the summer of 1867,
aged 2. Their second daughter, Placie J. Laflin, was born in the summer of 1866.
His wife Sarah died in the summer of 1867, when Placie was only one year old and
Placie was probably left with her grandmother Susan Watts.
By 1871 Hammond had moved to London and was working as a tailor and lodging at
4 Swan Street, St Mary Newington, Lambeth in the same building as his younger
brother Alexander.
John Hammond Laflin says: "His death certificate shows him as a private in
the Grenadier Guards. He died of pneumonia in February 1875 at the Hospital
Barracks, Little Warley, Billericay."
Placie J.Laflin was living with her grandmother Susan Watts at 31 Eastgate Street,
Bury St Edmunds in 1881, 1891 and 1901 and working as a dressmaker. In 1891 she was
listed as "Plaice J. Laflin" and in 1901 as "Placie T. Laflin".
