Susannah was the daughter of Samuel Laflin and his wife Caroline Thorpe. She was born in Croydon in the spring of 1862.

and step-father and attending school.
In 1879, when she was 17, Susannah Laflain married Charles Gillam in Croydon. In 1881,
Charles & Susan Gillam were living at 1 Russell Road, Croydon and Charles was working
as a general dealer. With them were two children, Charles (aged 3) and Jane (aged 0).
