In 1841, Sarah (aged 6) was living with her parents in Ringshall
but by 1851, Sarah (aged 16) had left home.
In the spring of 1859, Sarah Ann Laflin (a servant aged 23 and
the daughter of Abraham Laflin) married Samuel Orris (a widower
aged 27 and a groom) in Ringshall. Sarah made her mark instead
of signing the register which suggests she was illiterate.
In 1861, Samuel and Sarah Ann Orriss were living in Queen Street, Ipswich and
Samuel was working as a bricklayer's labourer. With them was their daughter
Catherine, aged 1 and born in Whersted.
In 1871, Samuel and Sarah Orriss were living in Cox Lane, Ipswich and Samuel
was working as a groom. With them were their three daughters, Catherine (aged 11
and born in Wherstead), Eliza (aged 9) and Ellen (aged 8), both born in Ipswich.
Sarah's brother Thomas Laughlin (a general labourer aged 31) was also living in
the same household.
In 1881 Samuel and Sarah Orriss were living in Old Foundry Road, Ipswich and
Samuel was working as a groom. All three of their daughters had left home and
may have been married by then. With them was a baby girl, Amelia Baker, who was
later adopted by Sarah's half-sister Anna Maria Beaumont.
In 1891 Samuel and Sarah Orriss were still living in Old Foundry Road, Ipswich
and Samuel was still working as a groom. Their married daughter Katherine Elliott
(who had married Alfred Elliott in 1873) was living in the same household and
working as a bootmaker. The next six entries in the census, although described
sons and daughters of the head of the household (Samuel),were probably Katherine's
children. These were Kate Ellen Elliott (aged 13), Ethel Elliott (aged 11), Arthur
Alfred Elliott (aged 10 and an imbecile from birth), Bertha Cecilia Elliott (aged 7)
and Alice Eliza Elliott (aged 5) - they were all at school while Albert Edward Elliott
(aged 1) was at home. Also in the same household was a visitor,Eliza Mary Angers
(aged 29) and her son Percy James Angers (aged 0) - she was probably their married
daughter Eliza.
