Samuel Laflin (aged 20, labourer of Ringshall & son of Benjamin
Laflin) married Caroline Thorpe (of full age & daughter of Thomas Thorpe) in
Battisford church on 1st May 1846. They both "made their mark" instead of signing.
Their first five children were baptised in Ringshall between 1847 and 1857, although
Israel, the youngest was described as "of Croydon", suggesting that the family
had moved away by then. Their son Israel was born in Croydon in the third quarter
of 1854 and their daughter Naomi was buried there in the summer of 1856.
In 1861, they were living in Gloucester Road, Croydon and Samuel was working
as a general labourer. With them were three of their surviving children -
George aged 8, Israel aged 6 and Emma aged 2 (Louisa aged 14 was away from home).
Samuel's in-laws, John and Marion Ramsey and his nephew William Ramsey, were also
living in the same household. Since Caroline's maiden name was Thorpe, it seems most
likely that Marion Ramsey (aged 26 & born in Battisford) was sister to either Samuel
or Caroline. Samuel had a sister Mary Ann, baptised in Ringshall in 1831, but she
would have been at least 30 in 1861.
Their daughter Susannah Laflin was born there in the first quarter of 1862 and
Samuel Laflin died there in the second quarter of 1862 at the age of 36.
"Frederick Loveland" was born there in the last quarter of 1864.
In the 1871 census, Charles Hilman and Caroline were living as husband and wife in
Russell Road, Croydon and Charles was working as a labourer. Their marriage has not
been found. In their household were their combined families - Charles Hilman's 3 sons
(William Hilman aged 13, Thomas Hilman aged 11 and John Hilman aged 6 - all at school)
and his 4 step-children, George Laughlin (now aged 18 and working as a "milk carrier"),
Israel Laughlin (aged 17 and a labourer), Sussannah Laughlin (aged 9 and at school)
and Frederick Laughlin (aged 6 and at school).
In the second quarter of 1875, Caroline Lafflin, aged 52, died in Croydon.
