In 1861 (aged 3) and 1871 (aged 13), Robert was living with his
parents in Ringshall. He probably attended the local school, but this was not
recorded.
In the 1881 census, Robert (aged 23) was living with his parents in Barking and
working as an agricultural labourer. In the autumn of 1882, Robert Laflin and
Margaret Hawes were married in the Bosmere district and between 1882 and 1889,
the births of their children were registered there. These were Margaret Maud Laflin
in summer 1883, Elizabeth Mary Laflin in spring 1885 and Kate Maria Laflin in summmer
1889. William was born around 1887, but his birth has yetto be found.
In the 1891 census, Robert and Margaret "Ladkin" had moved to Bishops Stortford and
were living in Parsonage Lane. Robert was working as a stud groom. With them were
four children, all born in Barking. These were Maud (aged 8 and at school), Elizabeth
(aged 6 and at school), William (aged 4) and Katie (aged 2).
The younger children were all born in the Bishops Stortford registration district.
These were Bertram George Laflin in summer 1891, Florence Mary Laflin in winter 1892,
Harry Laflin in spring 1896 and Eveline Laflin in winter 1897.
By 1901, Robert and Margaret were living at Woodhouse Farm, Bishops Stortford and
Robert was still working as a stud groom. With them were six children - Maud (aged 18),
Katie (aged 12), Bertie (aged 9), Florrie (aged 8 and at school), Harry (aged 5)
and Evelyn (aged 3). Elizabeth (aged 16) and William (aged 14) were not at home.
Two more children, born in Bishops Stortford, may also belong to this family. These
were Percy Laflin, born autumn 1901, and Ellen Laflin, born spring 1905.
In 1970, the estate of Miss Emma Mary Sage left a small amoun tof money to each
of the surviving children of William’s son Robert. These were listed as Mrs Maude
Hartwell, Mrs Mary Harris, Mr Bertram Laflin, Mrs Florence Phillips, Miss Evelyn
Laflin, Mr Percy Laflin and Miss Ellen Laflin. Three other children were said to
have died without issue by this date - they were probably William, Kate Maria and
Harry.
