Jonathan was the son of Jonathan Laflin and his wife Sarah Mulley. According to the IGI, he was born on 12th December 1861 and baptised in Bury St Edmunds in January 1862.

In 1871, Jonathan (aged 9) was living at 35 Tayfen Road, Bury
with his mother Sarah. In 1881 (aged 19) he was living in Fornham St Martin and
working as a grocer's assistant - probably in his father's shop.
In 1891, Jonathan Laflin (aged 27 and born in Bury St Edmunds) was living in
25 High Street Whitechapel, a boarder in the household of Charles T.Perry, and
working as a clerk.
Jonathan Laflin married Henrietta Denyer Lake in the third quarter of 1893 in the
Medway registration district. Their son Jonathan James G. Laflin was born in Lewisham
in the third quarter of 1895.
In 1901, Jonathan and Henrietta Laflin were living at 55 StDonath Road, Deptford and
Jonathan was working as manager to a wine merchant. With them ws their son Jonathan
J.Laflin, aged 5.
