James Laflin 1831-1890 & Hannah Carter 1839-?
James was the son of Robert Laflin and his wife Tamar Bramford and was baptised in Great Bricett on 14th August 1831, when his father was described as a shoemaker.

In the 1841 census, James (aged 11) was living at home with his parents
in Battisford. By 1851, James (aged 21) had left home and has not yet been found. He has
not been found in 1861 either.
James Laflin married Hannah Carter at the church of St John the Baptist in Shoreditch
on 19th March 1866. Their son James was born in the summer of 1866 in Newington, their
son Edwin Edward the following autumn in Bermondsey and by late 1868 they had moved to
Southwark. Their son Charles was born there in the winter of 1868 and their daughter
Ellen Jane in the autumn of 1870.
In the 1871 census, they were living at Queens Court, Queen Street, Southwark and
James was working as a "common labourer". With them were their fourchildren.
In the summer of 1871, both Charles Laflin (aged 2) and Edwin Edward Laflin died
and the following year (summer 1872) their youngest son Edwin Charles was born.
In 1881, James and Hannah Laflin were living at7 Gerdleston Road, Islington with their
two sons (James ,anerrandboyaged15, and Edwin, aged 9) and James was working as a
gardener. Their daughter "Ellen J. Laflen" (aged 10 and at school) was living at "House
Northern Works, Lincoln Holmes Common, Lincoln" in the household of her uncle and aunt
Thomas and Harriet Waring. Thomas Waring was a "Railway foreman, porter".
James died in the summer of 1890 at the age of 61, in Islington. In 1891, his widow
Hannah was living at 42 Anatolia Road, Islington and working as a charwoman. Her two sons
were away from home and have not yet been found. Her daughter Ellen J. Laflen (now a
dressmaker aged 22) was still in Lincoln with her uncle and aunt, Thomas and Thirza
J.Waring. Thomas was now a railway inspector and a nephew Robert A. Carter (aged 10
and at school) was also living in the same household.
In 1901, Hannah was living 46 Langdon Road, Islington and working as a charwoman
and her son James (a butcher’s assistant aged 34) was living with her.
