Benjamin Laflin 1799-1874 & Harriet Mann 1803-1870.
Benjamin was the son of James Laflin and his second wife Ann Ramsey and was baptised in July 1799. He was one of the two Benjamins living in Ringshall in the 1820s - the other was his cousin baptised in 1801. One of them married Phoebe Gosling in 1821 and the wedding was witnessed by Hannah, sister to his cousin Benjamin. The other married Harriet Mann in 1825 and the wedding was witnessed by Jacob, brother to this Benjamin. I have assumed that a brother or sister is more likely to be a witness than a cousin and therefore that this Benjamin was the one who married Harriet Mann.

Benjamin Laflin married Harriet Mann in March 1825 in Ringshall
and seems to have moved between Ringshall and the nearby village of Great Bricett
over the next few years, Benjamin being described as "labourer" or "farm labourer"
in the various records.
On 27th February 1838, a son was born in Bricett to Benjamin Laflin, an agricultural
worker, and Harriett (formerly Mann). The birth was registered on 10th March by
his mother (illiterate) and his death may have been reported at the same time.
On 27th June 1841, Rachael Laflin was born at Bricett. She was the daughter of Benjamin
Laflin, a rake-maker, and Harriet (formerly Mann) and the birth was registered on
1st June by her mother (illiterate). Since the birth was registered on 1st June,
I suspect the date of birth should have been 27th May.
In the 1841 census (6th June), Benjamin and Harriett were living in a cottage in
Great Bricett and Benjamin was working as an agricultural labourer. With them were
Samuel (aged 14), Harriett (aged 11) and Rachell (aged 3 weeks). Their daughter
Jemima (aged 15) was living in Ringshall with her grandparents James and Ann and
her uncle and aunt James and Sarah Pearl. (This seems to have become a permanent
arrangement because she was staying with the same uncle and aunt in 1851 and 1861.
In 1841, two children were missing - these were Mary Ann (aged 10) and Benjamin
(aged 4). They may have died young and Great Bricett burials will need to be searched
for this.
In the 1861 census (7th April), Benjamin and Harriet were living in Ringshall and
Benjamin was described as a farm labourer. Their daughter Harriett (aged 31) was
still unmarried and living with them while Jemima (aged 36) was unmarried and living
with James and Sarah Pearl. Harriett died in the summer of 1870 and in 1871 Benjamin
was living in Ringshall with his two unmarried daughters Jemima and Harriett. Jemima
was described as being “lame from birth”. Benjamin died in 1874 and in 1881 Jemima
and Harriet were living with their aunt Hannah, Jacob’s widow. In 1891, Jemima and
Harriet had their own household in Ringshall and had a lodger, Charles Garrod staying
with them. Jemima died in 1895 and Harriet in 1897.
