Abraham's first wife was Elizabeth Proctor and they were married
in Ringshall in November 1830, when Abraham was in his early 20s. They lived in
Ringshall and their 10 children were baptised there, Abraham being described as a
"labourer".
An un-named daughter of Abraham Laflin, an agricultural labourer, and
Elizabeth (formerly Proctor) was born in Ringshall on 29th November 1838.
Her birth was registered on 27th December by her mother (illiterate).
She was probably Mary-Ann Laflin, baptised in Ringshall in April 1839.
In the 1841 census (6th June) Abraham and Elizabeth were living at Red House,
Ringshall and Abraham was working as an agricultural labourer. Their
eldest son William (aged 9) was with his grandparents nearby, but
the other six children were with their parents. They were Jonathan
(aged 8), Thomas (aged 7), Sarah Ann (aged 6), Susan (aged 4),
Mary Ann (aged 2) and Eliza (aged 10 months).
Elizabeth probably died around 1850 because Abraham was described as a
widower in the 1851 census. He was living in Ringshall and working as a
farm labourer. In his household was Mary Head (a 62-year-old widow described
as a housekeeper) and four of his children. They were William (aged 19), Susan
(aged 14), Mary Ann (aged 12) and Eliza (aged 10).
On Boxing Day 1853, Abraham Laflin, widower, married Mary Ann Abel, a widow.
(She had been born Mary Ann Hall around 1820 and had married James Abel in 1842.
James had died in the autumn of 1852.) At the time of their marriage, Abraham was
44 and Mary Ann was 12 years younger.
They continued to live in Ringshall and 3 more daughters were born over the next
10 years. Mary Ann entered the details of their births in her bible, which has
survived and is now in the possession of descendants of her daughter Anna Maria.
In the 1861 census, Abraham and Mary were living in Ringshall with
their two small daughters (Anna Maria aged 6 and Catherine aged 3)
and all the children from Abraham's first marriage had left home.
In 1871, They were still living in Ringshall, this time with their
daughters Catherine aged 13 and Emma aged 8.
In 1881, they were living in Hadleigh Road, Ringshall and all their
children had left home. Abraham died in 1891 at the age of 83.
In 1891, Mary A. Laflin, widow was living at Whitefield, Ringshall
next to Abraham's nieces Jemima and Harriet. Mary Ann Laflin died
on 5th June 1901 at the age of 81.
