Phoebe Sawyer (born Laflin) 1844-?

Phoebe was the daughter of Philip Laflin and his wife Mary Palmer of Ringshall. She was born on 27th August 1844 at Ringshall. She was the daughter of Philip Laflin, a farmer, and Mary (formerly Palmer) and the birth was registered on 17th September by her mother (illiterate). She was baptised in Ringshall on 22nd September and baptised again at the age of 8 on 10th October 1852 with the rest of her family.

In 1851, Phoebe Laflin, aged 6, was living in Ringshall with her parents.

In 1861, Phoebe Loughlan (aged 16) was living in Creeting All Saints, in the household of Mary Ann Sheldrake (a 55-year-old widow) and working as a servant.

On 14th May 1869, a marriage was held in the parish church at Combs. The bride was Phoebe Laflin,a spinster of full age living in Combs and the daughter of Philip Laflin, a labourer. The groom was John Edward Sawyer, a bachelor of full age and a carpenter living in Needham Market and the son of William Sawyer, carpenter. The witnesses were Oliver Laflin, Ellen Laflin, Emily Heawoods & Elith Southgate.

They have not yet been found in the 1871 census.

In 1881, John and Phoebe Sawyer were living in Near Cottage, Buxhall near Stow and John (who had been born in Hitcham) was working as a carpenter. With them were four children (Jane aged 11, Clara aged 9 and Ellen aged 6 who were at school and Mary aged 1) and Susan Sawyer (a widow aged 69) who was John's mother.

In 1891, John C. Sawyer and his wife Phoebe were living in Near Cottage, Mill Road, Buxhall, Beyton. With them were their three youngest daughters, Clara (aged 19) an assistant teacher and Mary (aged 11) and Annie (aged 9) who were at school.

In 1901, John C. Sawyer and his wife Phoebe were living at "Water" on the road from Hammond Corner to W.Stowe, Buxhall and John (aged 57) was working as a carpenter. All four of their daughters were unmarried and living at home. They were Jane (aged 31) a domestic housemaid, Clara (aged 29) an assistant teacher, Mary (aged 21) a dressmaker and Annie (aged 19) a dressmaker.
