In 1861, Penelope Laflin, aged 13, was living with her parents in a cottage in
Hitcham and attending school.
Penelope Laflin married Arthur Ward on 4th May 1868 in Hitcham (in the Cosford
registration district). Arthur had been born in Wattisham around 1846 and his
parents were Thomas Ward & Jemima (Hoyle).
They have not yet been found in the 1871 census.
In 1881, Arthur and Penelope Ward were living in Chelsworth Road, Monks Eleigh and
Arthur was working as a corn miller. With them were their five children (Frank aged 8,
Ellen aged 6, Arthur aged 5, Bessie aged 2 and William aged 1 month) and a general
domestic servant,Eliza Spraggins (aged 13 from Monks Eleigh). The three eldest children
were at school.
In 1891, Arthur and Penelope Ward were living at Lower Mill, Chelsworth Street, Monks
Eleigh and Arthur was working as a miller. With them were seven of their children and
a general servant, Ellen Pitt (aged 16 from Kettlebaston). Frank P.Ward (aged 18) and
Arthur E.Ward (aged 16) were "miller's assistant"s, presumably working with their father.
Ellen Gertrude May Ward (aged 16) was living at 28 UpperOrwell Street, Ipswich in the
household of her uncle Robert Moss and working as a "fancy trade assistant". The next
three children were all at school - they were Bessie (aged 12), William (aged 11), and
Lilian (aged 6). The two youngest children were Bertrand (aged 4) and Lawrence
(aged 1).
In 1901, Arthur and Penelope Ward were still at Lower Mill, Monks Eleigh and Arthur was
now a "miller and farmer". With them were three of their children - Bessie (aged 21),
Lilian (aged 16) and Lawrence (aged 11) -and a grand-daughter May Ward (aged 3 and born
in Monks Eleigh).
One of Penelope’s daughters was the mother-in-law of Mrs Margaret Dyer, who wrote to
me in July 1990.
