Ellen (Maria) Bolton (born Laflin) 1849-?
She was the daughter of Philip
Laflin and his wife Mary Palmer of Ringshall. Ellen Laflin was born in
the last quarter of 1849. On 10th October, when all the children were baptised
in Ringshall, the register listed "Maria aged 3". Ellen was 3 years old at the
time and was probably the child to which the record refers. In all other records,
she uses the name "Ellen".

In 1851, Ellen Laflin (aged 1) was living with her parents
in Ringshall.
In 1861, Ellen Laflin (aged 11) was living with her brothers and
her widowed mother in Ringshall. She was probably attending the village school,
but this was not recorded in the census entry.
In 1871, Ellen Laflin (unmarried and aged 21) was living with her widowed mother
and her brother Charles in Ringshall.
In the first quarter of 1872, Ellen Laflin and William Bolton were married. On 21st
March 1872, after banns, a marriage was held in the parish church in Ringshall. The
bride was Ellen Laflin, aged 22, daughter of Philip Laflin. The groom was William
Bolton, a labourer aged 24. One of the witnesses was Ellen's brother Charles Laflin
and both Charles and Ellen made their marks instead of signing their names.
David Squirrel says that William had been born about 1848 in Nedging and was
the son of Abraham Bolton and Eliza (born Welham).
In 1881, William and Ellen Bolton were living in Stowmarket Road, Ringshall and
William was working as a labourer. With them were four children - Philip (aged 8),
Sophia (aged 7), and Elizabeth (aged 5), who were at school, and Eliza (aged 2).
In 1891, William and Ellen Bolton were living at Pot Kiln Farm, Hadleugh Road, Combs
and William was working as an agricultural labourer. Their son Philip Bolton (now
aged 15 and working as an agricultural labourer) was living with them. So were their
children Eliza (aged 12), Frank (aged 9 and at school) and Charlie (aged 7). The
final member of the household was their niece Mary Robinson (aged 12).
Their daughter Elizabeth Bolton (aged 15) was living at Beulah Cottages, Rose Hill
Road, Ipswich and working as a laundress, along with her cousins Emily and Amelia
Laflin
