In the 1881 census, Alfred and Julia A. Richardson were living in Dunmow Road, Great Bardfield, Essex, with their four children and Alfred was described as an "agricultural labourer". The children were William (aged 8), Ernest (aged 6) and Annie (aged 4), who were at school, and Edgar (aged 2).

Ellen Deborah Richardson was born in the third quarter of 1883 and Herbert Laflin Richardson was born in the third quarter of 1885.

In 1891, Alfred and Julia A. Richardson were living in the High Street, Bardfield Saling, Stebbing Essex. Alfred was working as a groom (domestic) and Julia as a laundress. With them were their children, William (a wheelwright aged 18), Ernest (a shoemaker's apprentice aged 16) and Edgar (aged 12), Ellen (aged 7) and Herbert (aged 5) who were at school.
Annie (a domestic servant aged 14) was at Church Street, Saffron Walden, in the household of Henrietta S. Griffinhoofe a widow living on her own means.

In 1901, Alfred and Julia Ann Richardson were living in the High Street, Great Bardfield and Alfred was a stockman on a farm. With them were their three younger sons, Ernest (a journeyman shoemaker aged 26), Edgar (a jobbing gassener aged 22) and Herbert (an agricultural labourer aged 15).

Julia died in the third quarter of 1945 at the age of 99, "just a few weeks short of her 100th birthday" according to her brother Arthur's family.
