James Laflin 1850-1929

James Laflin was born and baptised at Barking in September 1850, son of Benjamin Laflin and Charlotte Eleanor (born Mullet).

James Laflin was living with his parents in Ringshall in 1851 when he was 1 year old and again in 1861 when he was aged 10 and working as a drover. In this census, the surname was wrongly transcribed as "SAFFIN".

In 1871, James Laflin (aged 26 and born in Barking), was living at Boarded House, Ringshall in the household of Marinne Makens and working as a farm servant.

In the third quarter of 1877, Ringshall parish registers show the marriage of James Laflin, aged 27, labourer, son of Benjamin Laflin, horseman and Deborah Emsden aged 26. Deborah had been born in the first quarter of 1852.

In 1881, James and Deborah Laflin were living at Raans Farm, Amersham, Bucks and James was working as an agricultural labourer. Later they moved to Flaunden, Herts.

Emma Agnes "LAFLIX" was born in the third quarter of 1888 in the Hemel Hempstead district and Emma Agnes, daughter of James Laflin and Deborah was baptised in Flaunden on 2nd September 1888. Ethel Annie Laflin was born in the first quarter of 1891 in the Hemel Hempstead district.

In 1891, James and Deborah Laflin were living at Martin Top Farmhouse, Flaunden, Herts and James was working as a horse-keeper. With them were their two daughters, Emma Agnes (aged 2) and Ethel Annie (aged 2 months) and also James' sister Esther Last and niece Ellen J. Last (aged 2).

Ellen Winifred Lafflin was born in the first quarter of 1894 and baptised in Flaunden on 20th May 1894.

Emma Agnes Laflin died on 4th July 1898 at Martin Top, Flaunden. She was 10 years old and the daughter of James Laflin, a farm labourer. The cause of death was “typhoid, 6 days and exhaustion” and the death was reported on 5th July by her father.

In 1901, James and Deborah Laflin were living at White End Farm, Latimer, Bucks and James was a "ploughman on a farm". With them were their remaining two daughters, Ethel Annie (aged 10) and Winifred (aged 7).

He was said by his nieces (Arthur's daughters) to have had two daughters, Ellen and Ethel, who used to exchange letters with them.

James Laflin died in the second quarter of 1929, at the age of 79, in the Amersham area.
