Abraham Laflin 1841-?

Abraham Laflin was born in the third quarter of 1841 and was the son of Jonathan Laflin and his wife Elizabeth Stockings.

Abraham was born shortly after his parent’s wedding. He was living at home with his parents in 1851 in Battisford Tye, but had left home before the 1861 census. He has not yet been found in 1861, but he married Emma Mills in the first quarter of 1866 in the Stow registration district.

Charles Fredrick Laflin was born in the first quarter of 1867. Alice Jane Laflin was born in the last quarter of 1870 and baptised in Combs on 23rd October 1870. They have not been found in the 1871 census. James William Laflin was born in the third quarter of 1872 and William James was baptised in Combs on 7 July 1872. Harry Laflin was born in the second quarter of 1874 and a child whose name was illegible was baptised in Combs on 19 July 1874. Ernest Laflin was born in the last quarter of 1876 and baptised in Combs on 4th August 1878. Maurice Laflin was born in the third quarter of 1879.

In 1881 Abraham and Emma Lafflin were living a Moats Tye, Combs and Abraham was working as an agricultural labourer. With them were four of their children - Fredrick (aged 14 and working as an agricultural labourer), Harry (aged 6 and still at school), Earnest (aged 4) and Mauris (aged 1). Alice Jane (aged 9) was not with her parents. However "Alise J. Laffling" (aged 10 and still at school) was living with her grandparents William and Elizabeth Smith in another household in Moats Tye.

Kate Elizabeth Laflin was born in the second quarter of 1882 and Bertie Laflen was born in the second quarter of 1885. In 1891, Abraham and Emma Laflin were living at Moats Tye and Abraham was working as a farm labourer. In the same household were six of their children and a lodger, a widower called William Smith (probably Emma's step-father). The children were James (aged 18), Harry (aged 16 and Ernest (aged 14) - all unmarried and working as "tanner's labourers". Maurice (aged 11) was working as an agricultural labourer while Elizabeth (aged 9) and Bertie (aged 5) were still at school.

Their eldest son Charles Frederick Laflin had married Hannah Game in the third quarter of 1889. Their daughter Florence Ellen Laflin was born in the first quarter of 1890 and their son George Stanley in the first quarter of 1891. In the 1891 census, Frederick and Hannah Laflin were living in Combs and Frederick was working as a tanner's labourer (like his brothers). With them were Florence (aged 1) and Stanley (aged 3 months).

Charles Edwin Laflin was born in the last quarter of 1893 and Maurice Laflin was born in the last quarter of 1899. In the last quarter of 1894, James William Laflin was married - his bride may have been either Alice Hammond or Sarah Squirrel.

In 1901, Abram and Emma Laflin were living in Combs Ford, Combs and Abraham was still working as an agricultural labourer. With them were their two youngest sons - Ernest (aged 23) and Bertie (aged 15), both of whom were working as agricultural labourers.

Frederick and Hannah Laflin were living in Moats Tye Road, Combs and Frederick was working as a tanner's labourer. His brother Maurice Laflin was living in the same household and also working as a tanner's labourer. With them were Frederick and Hannah's children - Florence (aged 11), George (aged 10), Charles (aged 7) and Maurice (aged 1). The three elder children were all at school.

On 3rd August 1907, a marriage was held in the parish church at Combs, after banns. The bride was Kate Elizabeth Laflin a spinster aged 25 and a domestic servant living in Combs and the daughter of Abraham Laflin, a labourer. The groom was Harold John Cawley a bachelor aged 29 and a stage driver from Cricklewood in London and the son of John Cawley, a gardener. The witnesses were Rhoda Naomi Agnes Laflin and Bertie Laflin and all four signed.
