He appeared, aged 15, in the 1841 census with his parents living at
Red House, Ringshall. No occupation was given, but he was probably a farm labourer.
The next record in which he appeared was his marriage in 1844. A marriage was held in
the parish church of Nedging on 17th February 1844, after banns. The groom was
Abraham Laflin, a bachelor of full age (22) and a labourer, living in Nedging, and
the son of Jonathan Laflin, a labourer. The bride was Letitia Garrod, a spinster
of full age and a servant, also living in Nedging, and the daughter of William
Garrod, a labourer. The witnesses were Joseph Garrod and Eliza Welhams and all
four made their marks instead of signing.
Sarah Ann Laflin was born on 27th February 1844 in Nedging. Her parents were
Abraham Laflin, a labourer, and Letitia (formerly Garrod). The birth was registered
on 15th March by her mother (still illiterate).
Soon after this, the family returned to Ringshall, because the younger children were all
born in Ringshall. In 1851, Abraham and Letitia Laflin were living in Ringshall and Abraham
was working as an agricultural labourer. With them were their three daughters, Sarah Ann
(aged 7), Emma (aged 5) and Jane Ann (aged 1) and a visitor Sarah Pilbrow.
In 1861 Abraham and Lettisher Laflin were living in Ringshall and Abraham was working
as a "flour dealer". Lettisher was described as "deaf". With them were five daughters -
Sarah Ann (an unmarried servant aged 17), Jane Anna (aged 12), Catherine (aged 10),
Eliza (aged 8) and Angelina (aged 4). The four younger girls were still at school.
One member of the family was missing, Emma Laflin born in the winter of 1845 and so
16 at this time. She was probably the "Emma Laflin, aged 15" who was a "servant" in
the household of her aunt Sarah Ann Wicks in Battisford.
In the 1871 census, they were living at Borded Barn, Whatfield with their daughter
Angelina and grand-daughter Alice Abbot (aged 1).
In 1881, they were living at Preston Road, Monks Eleigh with their daughter Angelina.
Littisher Laflin died in in second quarter of 1889 at the age of 72 and "Letitia Laflin
of Kettlebarton, aged 72" was buried in Ringshall on 2oth April 1889.
They have not yet been found in 1891. Abraham Laflin died in the first quarter of 1901,
aged 78. In 1901, Angelina Laflin was living in Elmsett Road, Whatfield and was a 48-year-old
dressmaker. She died in 1936.
