Samuel Laflin 1839-?
Samuel was the youngest son of John Laflin and his wife Phoebe Barrel and was born in the second quarter of 1839 but his baptism has not been found.

In the first quarter of 1859, Samuel Laflin married Mahala Andrews
and they settled in Nettlestead where their children were baptised. Samuel's widowed
mother Phoebe lived with them until her death in 1887 and in 1871,Samuel's unmarried
sister Sarah (aged 37) was also living with them.
In 1861, Samuel and Mahala Laflin were living in Nettlestead and Samuel was working as
an agricultural labourer. He had been born in Nettlestead while Mahala had been born
in Somersham. In the same household were their daughter Elizabeth (aged 1), Samuel's
widowed mother Phoebe and a lodger, Isaac Miller.
In 1871, Samuel and Mahalath Laflin were living in a cottage in Nettlestead and Samuel
was working as an agricultural labourer. Also in the same household were Samuel's
mother Phoebe and his sister Sarah as well as six children. The children were Elizabeth
(aged 11), Edgar (aged 8), Henry (aged 5), Isabella (aged 3), Adelaide (aged 1) and the
baby Alfred.
In 1881, Samuel and Mahala Laflin were living in a cottage in Nettlestead and Samuel
was working as a farm labourer. Samuel's mother Phoebe was still living with them along
with their six children, who were Edgar (an unmarried farm labourer aged 18), Henry
(an unmarried farm labourer aged 16), Adelaide (aged 11), Alfred (aged 9), Edith (aged 7)
and Arthur William (aged 5).
In 1891, Samuel and Mahalath Laffling were living in Ofton Road, Nettlestead and
Samuel was working as an agricultural labourer. With them were four of their children,
Henry (aged 25), Alfred (aged 20), Arthur (aged 16) and Isabella (aged 9 and still
at school). The three sons were unmarried and working as agricultural labourers. Their
son Edgar (aged 28) was married and living in Somersham with his wife and family.
In 1901, Samuel and Mahalah Laflin were living in a cottage in Nettlestead with their
daughter Isabella (aged 19) and Samuel was a "horseman on a farm".
THEIR CHILDREN.
1. ELIZABETH LAFLIN was born in the second quarter of 1860 and baptised in April
1860. She was at home with her parents in 1861 (aged 1) and 1871 (aged 11). In October
1876, "Elizabeth Lafflin of Nettlestead, aged 16" was buried there.
2. EDGAR LAFFLIN was baptised in May 1862, but his birth has not been found. He
was living at home with his parents in 1871 (aged 8) and 1881 (aged 18), when he was
unmarried and working as a farm labourer.
In the first quarter of 1882, Edgar Laffling and Alice Pryke were married and their
first four children were baptised in Nettlestead, where Edgar was working as a labourer.
These were Mary Elizabeth (baptised March 1883), Charles (baptised February 1885), Harry
(baptised June 1887) and Sarah Maude (baptised May 1889).
In 1891, Edgar and Alice Elizabeth Laffling were living in Somersham and Edgar was
working as an agricultural labourer. With them were Mary Elizabeth (aged 8), Charles
(aged 6) and Harry (aged 3), all of whom were at school.
Three more children were baptised in Somersham - these were Alfred (baptised August 1891),
Isabel Elsie (baptised September 1894) and Nellie Edith (baptised August 1896).
3. HENRY LAFLIN was born in the third quarter of 1865 and baptised in August 1865.
He was with his parents in 1871 (aged 5), in 1881 (aged 16 and working as a farm labourer)
and 1891 (aged 25 and working as an agricultural labourer).
In the last quarter of 1894, Henry Laffling and Mary Beaumont were married and settled in
Nettlestead where their children were baptised. These were Theresa Annie (born July 1895
and baptised in September), Peter Maurice (baptised September 1896) and George Arthur
(baptised September 1899).
4. ISABELLA LAFLIN was baptised in Nettlestead in August 1867, but her birth has
not been found. In 1871, Isabella (aged 3) was living with her parents. In December 1879,
Isabella Lafflin of Nettlestead, aged 12, was buried there.
5. ADELAIDE LAFLIN was born in the third quarter of 1869 and baptised in July
1869 in Nettlestead. She was with her parents in 1871 (aged 1)and in 1881 (aged 11).
She was not living with them in 1891.
In the first quarter of 1896, Ada Adelaide Laffling married Charles Edward Giles in the
Ipswich registration district.
In 1901, Charles E. Giles and Ada Giles were living at 62 Surbiton Road, Ipswich and
Charles was working as a "stationary engine driver". With them were three children -
May (aged 3), Florence (aged 2)and Charles (aged 1).
Adelaide and Charles Edward Giles were ancestors of Anne Chicken (born Giles) who
contacted me in 2005.
6. ALFRED LAFLIN was born in the second quarter of 1871 and baptised in Nettlestead
in April 1871. He was living with his parents in 1871, 1881 (aged 9) and 1891 (aged 20),
when he was unmarried and working as an agricultural labourer.
In the first quarter of 1898, Alfred Laffling and Frances Anna Cooper were married and
their son Robert was baptised in Nettlestead in October 1899.
7. EDITH ANNIE LAFFLIN was baptised in Nettlestead in October 1873 and Edith Laflin
(aged 3) was with her parents in 1881, but was not with them in 1891.
8. ARTHUR WILLIAM LAFFLIN was baptised in Nettlestead in February 1876. Arthur
William Laflin (aged 5) was with his parents in 1881 and Arthur Laflin (aged 16) was
with them in 1891, when he was working as an agricultural labourer.
9. ROBERT LAFLIN was baptised in Nettlestead in September 1877 and "Robert Lafflin
of Nettlestead aged 1" was buried there in August 1878.
10. ISABELLA LAFFLIN was baptised in Nettlestead in November 1881. Isabella Laffling
(aged 9) was with her parents in 1891 and Isabella Laflin (aged 19) was still living with
them in 1901.
