John Laflin 1795-1841.

John was the son of William Laflin and his wife Susan Creswelle. He was born on 25th April 1795 but for some reason was not baptised until April 1798, shortly before his third birthday. He moved away from Ringshall and settled in Baylham where he married Phoebe Barrel in 1819.

Their eldest son "John Woollard Laflin" was baptised in Somersham in September 1820. The rest of the family were baptised in Baylham between 1822 and 1837. The youngest son, Samuel, was born in the summer of 1839 and was not baptised in Baylham.

In the 1841 census, (6 June 1841) Phoebe and the nine children were living at Neeve's Cottage, Nettlestead and John was nearby at "by Often Lime Kiln". John was working as an agricultural labourer as were his sons John (aged 20-24), Moses (aged 15-19), Aron (aged 15-19) and Elijah (aged 15-19). The younger children (Edgar aged 13, Elisha aged 10, Sarah aged 7, Eliza aged 4 and Samuel aged 2) were either at home or attending school. Nothing more is known of Eliza.

In July 1841, John Laflin (aged 46) died at Blakenham Manor of "accidental suffocation" and the death was reported by the Ipswich Coroner. John Lafflin, aged 47, was buried in Nettlestead on 28th July 1841.

In both 1861, 1871 and 1881, Phoebe Laflin, a widow, was living with her youngest son Samuel, his wife Mahala and their family. In 1871, their daughter Sarah was also living with Samuel and his family, but apart from this her history has yet to be found. Phoebe Lafflin of Nettlestead, aged 91, was buried there on 31st December 1887.
