Elijah Laflin 1826-1889

Elijah was the fourth son of John Laflin and his wife Phoebe Barrel and was baptised in Baylham in May 1826.

In the first quarter of 1853, Elijah Lafflin married Eliza Ranson and they settled in Nettlestead. Their children were baptised there between 1853 and 1868.

In 1861, Elijah and Eliza Laflin were living in Nettlestead with four children and Elijah was working as a labourer. The children were Edward (aged 6), Eliza (aged 5), Emma (aged 3 and born in Arlesford, Essex) and Thomas (aged 1).

In 1871, Elijah and Eliza Laflin were living in a cottage in Nettlestead and Elijah was working as an agricultural labourer. With them were five children - John Edward (an agricultural labourer aged 19), Thomas (aged 11), Rosa (aged 8), "Eliza" (aged 6) and Walter (aged 2). Eliza (aged 15) and Emma (aged 13) were not with their parents in this census and may have left home and gone into service.

In 1881, Elijah and Eliza Laffling were living in Somersham and Elijah was working as an agricultural labourer. With them were their two youngest sons - Thos.Fredk. (an unmarried agricultural labourer aged 21) and Walter (aged 12 and still at school). Their daughter Ellen (a housemaid aged 16) was living in the household of Jeremiah Gooding at The Hall, Witnesham, Suffolk.

Elijah Laffling, aged 62, died in the third quarter of 1889 and "Elijah Lafling of Somersham" was buried there in August 1889.

THEIR CHILDREN

1. JOHN EDWARD LAFLIN was born in the third quarter of 1853 and baptised in Nettlestead in November 1853. Edward Laflin (age 6) was living with his parents in the 1861 census. John Edward Laflin (aged 19 and an unmarried agricultural labourer) was living with them in 1871. "John Edward Laughlin", aged 26, died in the last quarter of 1879 and "John Edward Lafflin of Nettlestead" was buried there in November 1879.

2. ELIZA LAFLIN was baptised in Nettlestead in September 1854 and may have been the female child whose birth was registered in that quarter. Eliza Laflin, aged 5 was living with her parents in 1861, but this is the last record relating to her which has so far been found.

3 & 4. EMMA and MARY ANN LAFLING were born in the second quarter of 1857 in the Tendring registration district and Mary Ann died there in the last quarter of 1858. Emma was baptised in Nettlestead in April 1860 and in 1861 she was living with her parents and said to have been born in Arlesford, Essex. In 1871, aged 14, she was not living with her parents and may have left home to go into service.

5. THOMAS FREDERICK LAFLIN was born in the first quarter of 1860 and baptised in Nettlestead in April 1860. He was unmarried and living with his parents in 1861 (aged 1), 1871 (aged 11) and 1881 (aged 21).

6. ROSE/ROSETTA LAFLIN was born in the second quarter of 1862 and baptised “Rosetta” in August 1862. She was with her parents in the 1871 census as “Rosa” aged 8, but had left home by 1881 when she was 18.

7. ELLEN LAFLIN was born in the third quarter of 1864 and a daughter of Elijah and Eliza whose name was illegible was baptised in Nettlestead in August 1864. In 1861, "Eliza" Laflin, aged 6,was living with her parents in Nettlestead. In 1881, Ellen Laffling, aged 16, was working as a housemaid in the household of Jeremiah Gooding at The Hall, Witnesham, Suffolk.

8. WALTER LAFLIN was born in the third quarter of 1868 and baptised in September 1868. He was with his parents in 1871 (aged 2) and still with them in 1881, when he was 12 years old and at school.
