William Laflin 1749-1826.

William was the son of Jonathan Laflin and his wife Elizabeth (Hix). He was buried in 1826, aged 78 which suggests that he was born in 1748. This agrees well with entry in the Bishop's Transcripts showing his baptism in March 1749. I have yet to find any record of his marriage, but in the 1770s in was the custom in Ringshall to record the mother's maiden name in the child's baptism record, and from this we know that she was Susan Crussel or Creswelle. When she was buried in 1801, her age was given as 46 suggesting she was born in 1755 and so was 21 when their first child was baptised in 1776. They were probably married shortly before this, in 1774 or 1775.

When William's wife Susan died in 1801, she left several small children, but the three eldest girls (Susan aged 25, Hannah aged 20 and Kezia aged 18) would have been capable of looking after the family. Kezia however had left home and moved to Great Bricett by 1803, when she married Robert Prentice there. In 1805, William’s daughter Sarah was buried in Ringshall. Elizabeth moved to Great Bricett and married Robert Gilbert there in 1815. Dinah and Jemima remained in Ringshall and were buried there in the summer of 1816, but William was described as “of Bricett” when he was buried in Ringshall in 1826. This suggests he moved to Bricett, probably to be near his married daughters Kezia and Elizabeth.
