Jonathan Laflin 1715-1784.
He was the eldest son of Jonathan and Mary Laflin and was baptised in Ringshall in 1715. In 1745, he married Elizabeth Hicks or Hix at Creeting All Saints, but they soon returned to Ringshall and their children were baptised there. Records remain of eleven children, baptised over the period from 1747 to 1770.

Jonathan was buried at Ringshall in 1785, at the age of 69 and his widow
Elizabeth was buried there in 1805. Their children were:
1. Jonathan baptised December 1747. He does not appear again in the records.
2. William baptised March 1749. He married Susan Crussel or Creswelle and they
had fifteen children.
3. Abraham baptised September 1750. He married Dinah Harvey and they had five children.
4. John baptised December 1751. He married Mary Neville and they had seven children.
The parish registers for Ringshall resume after 1751, the previous entries being taken
from the Bishop's Transcripts. From here on, the records are once more taken from the
fiches of the registers stored in the Suffolk Record Office.
5. Mary baptised April 1754. In September 1777 she married Edward Squirrel at Ringshall.
David Squirrel has supplied some information about her. Her husband Edmund Squirrel
had been baptised in March 1756 in Hitcham. They had two daughters, Frances Squirrel
baptised May 1778 and Hannah Squirrel baptised April 1782 - both baptised in Wattisham.
Mary was buried in July 1806 in Ringshall.
6. Sarah baptised March 1756. On 6th January 1778 she married James Bird in Haughley
and was the ancester of Mrs Gwen Thorn of Rochford, Essex. Sarah was buried in
Combes on 16th Sept. 1784.
7. Hannah baptised December 1757. married 1786 John Sewell 1760-1841. 9 children.
8. Frances baptised April 1760 and buried in Ringshall in 1837, aged 76.
9. Benjamin baptised November 1767. He was probably the Benjamin Laflin who married
Rebecca Saunders in Halesworth in 1787.
10. James also baptised November 1767. He was married twice, first to Bathsheba
Newstead and after her death to Ann Ramsey.
11. Philip baptised October 1770, and buried in Ringshall in November 1853,
aged 84.
Both John Hammond Laflin and Philip Laflin trace their descent from
the Benjamin Laflin who married Phoebe Gosling in 1821. There were two possible Benjamins,
who were cousins. One was the son of James Laflin and his second wife Ann (Ramsey), who
was baptised on 22nd July 1799. The other was the son of Philip Laflin and his wife
Susannah, who was born in 1797 and baptised on 25th October 1801.
One of these Benjamins married Phoebe Gosling on 10th April 1821 and the marriage was
witnessed by Hannah Laflin. The other Benjamin married Harriet Mann on 30th March 1825
and this marriage was witnessed by Jacob Laflin. Philip Laflin had a daughter Hannah
and James had a son Jacob. If we assume that the marriage is more likely to have been
witnessed by the groom’s brother or sister than by his cousin, then we can say that
the Benjamin who married Phoebe Gosling was more likely to have been Philip’s son and
the one who married Harriet Mann was more likely to have been James' son.
